About MIME Unit

MIME Unit is a sound production cum recording studio based in the east of Singapore. It focuses on the niche market of budget recording for bands and musical artists who need quality sounding recordings without the substantially high budget that it takes to fund for such a project.

It does not pretend to be the best there is, neither does it humble itself by claiming to be the worst. It offers what it offers: using good yet affordable equipment, and a decade of sound experience to produce good quality sound recordings that bands and artists can be proud of, yet at a price that is almost as affordable as going to a few weeks of jamming sessions.

If you and/or your bands are students, in full-time national service, folks who earn enough to feed a family but not feed a passion, or just someone who is looking for a cheaper alternative in general, MIME Unit is for you.

About [armen]

Armen Rizal Rahman interest in music caught fire when he first dabbled with audio editing and sound producing during his studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The idea of being able to manipulate sound was fascinating to him, and soon begins the journey that took him further and deeper into the arts of audio. Armed with a minimally equipped personal desktop computer, and a karaoke microphone, he produced two demos in the space of two years (Orbital Nocturne and A Prologue to Genre), under a pseudo identity, Ubermensch... Here's a list to give you a good gauge of how MIME Unit compares to other:

Yup, we're THAT crazy to push our pricing like that. Unfortunately, there are folks out there who wants to test our sanity further.

All we can say is: If you think we're expensive, don't have a band in the first place. *grins*

Competing? No. Just accomodating to needs.
12:18 PM

At the rates we are offering to you, people might think that our bargain prices is an act of "terrorizing" the local industry music and sound recording rates; that we are trying to "spoil market", as how people would put it.

The above is absolutely untrue. We would be the first to urge you to invest more into your recordings. The current rates of studios and producers may seem expensive to most, but when one is able to churn out the results to match, you will know that you are getting your money's worth. So go for those people first.

In fact, it is complete madness on our part to subject ourselves to working with a rate that's gonna feed us just under five dollars per hour at most times, so it was never about the money to begin with. It is all about making sure that bands have that chance to have their efforts put into tangible form.

Think of it this way: You're a band who has been performing for a few years. You got yourself a decent following, everyone is asking when is your album gonna be out, you have enough material for at least two albums, but you never got about to making one because:
  1. You are a student, or serving NS, or earning a measly 1-2k a month, which is hardly enough to supplement your daily needs.
  2. Making an album cost thousands; and
  3. You are not sure that, after spending so much, people are actually gonna buy them.
Almost all of us believe that in any sort of investment, there are three factors that everyone look out for: cheaper, faster, better. In most times, we all can only afford two of that three.

We are not here to claim that we ARE the solution to that problem. What we offer is just an avenue to aid you to further your band's journey. In fact, we should be seen as the last resort that you seek, when all else fail. If you can afford the expense you put to your high end gears for example, do them justice by having a decent recording done. We don't usually turn away those who want to utilize our services, but we rather not deal with bargain hunters who are looking to skimp with their recording. We are inexpensive, not CHEAP.

MIME Unit recording pricing: Facts, not figures
12:02 PM

The figures below confusing you? Then let's put it this way.

If you can afford:
  • A brand new beginner guitar
  • A boutique pedal
  • A decent practice amp
  • Two 2nd hand good condition Boss pedals
  • Five 2-hour jamming sessions
  • Ten pay-to-play tickets that cost $20 each
Then you can afford to record at least one song with MIME unit.

Remember that with MIME Unit, you are:

  • Sharing the price with your fellow band members, as oppose to saving up on your own
  • Getting great value from a decently paced recording that multi-tracked, and well mixed as opposed to recording that's done within a day and mixed within an hour.
  • Getting great technical and creative service by experienced producers who really wants to help you sound good.
  • Able to look at different modes of payment to well suit your needs.

Pricing (Amp mic-ing)
10:22 PM

We do not recommend mic-ing of amps at MIME Unit because quite frankly, MIME Unit is not the best environment for live recordings (no choice for vocals, though). It is also an added hassle on our part to find that sweet spot for the guitar's tone as well as a wastage of studio time for the band, who is already forking out substantial amounts as it is (even though it IS still far lesser than most studio works).

We do entertain requests for mic-ed amp recording if the band so insists. However there will be an additional charge of $20 for every recording session involving amps. Also, additional hourly cost will be incurred if the band were to choose to use the in-house amp for recording (refer to our pricing rates)

Pricing (Miscellaneous)
7:18 AM

As stated in the the basic pricing list, we do include a copy of the mixed down track to the artist and band. However, we do not provide the raw wav files of the instrument in individual layers as we would like to reserve exclusive rights to our recording of the song.

However, we would provide a copy of the raw file sounds on a CD, should the band require @ $50 dollars per song.

Pricing (Using in-house equipment)
10:20 PM

We do not recommend the use of our equipments, except if we feel that it will help to enhance the song, as cost will be incurred towards repairing and maintaining the said equipment. Also, it will not represent the true sound of the band, as each personnel have their own personal tone in accordance to the equipment and gears they use.

We do, however, oblige to requests for the use of our equipments if the band still chooses to do so. Below are the rates for usage of each equipment:

-------------------------------------------------------

Use of in-house instruments (guitar or bass) : $30 for 2 songs or 5 packets of strings with gauges specific to the instrument used.

Use of in-house instruments (amp for practice) : $10 per hour.

Use of in-house instruments (amp for recording via mic): recording rate of $35 per hour or extra $15 per hour added to the package deal.

Use of in-house instruments (pedals): $5 per pedal per hour.

*Note that the above fees are wavered if it used by recommendation of the producer.

Music Video Production
10:30 PM

As much as we would like to concentrate on audio works, sometimes it is necessary for us to push the boundaries a little and look to exploring the possibilities of going beyond sound. That is why we are offering the services of making music videos.

We can honestly say to you that we are no run-of-the-mill amateurs when it comes to video production either. We have a team backed with up to 10 years of experience who have produced several award winning films, and have touched based with several film festivals INTERNATIONALLY.

A good music video would cost you around at least SGD $10k-$15k to produce, more than an entire album. However, at MIME Unit, we believe that budget should not be a factor to your needs. That is why our rates start from a mere SGD $1k-2k.

Do note that that amount is not inclusive of expenses like props, location and transport. However, perhaps a chat with us will give you a clearer sense of direction to the music video that you have in mind, and will of course give us an idea of how to make it as cost effective as possible.

Other services and rates
5:11 PM

Producing an album is actually a complicated affair. We are not just talking about recording and mixing and one or two suggestions on how to improve here. We are talking about the process of pre-planning, recording, mixing, mastering etc. Often it involves working outside the premise of the MIME Unit studio, adding elements to the song that the band does not usually have when it comes to live performances (eg strings, back up session vocalists etc). This is a stage where you really need to roll up your sleeves and get into the thick of the action.

Bands often spend $8k-$10k on recording a producing a whole album. To keep in line with MIME Units competitive rates, we have a package to offer to bands who are interested in acquiring our service to make a full length album. Please contact us for more info.

Our producer is also more than willing to work on projects that are not part of the band contexts, or working outside of MIME Unit's working environment. Please contact us for more info.
